a day in the life

From the day you accept your bid, there is so much to look forward to for the next four years. Below we provide a little insight the best of the best events and traditions the Alpha Tau chapter of Alpha Chi Omega has instore.

Big Little Reveal

Our chapter of Alpha Chi Omega has a unique big little reveal event that we take pride in. The week leading up includes five days of clues and small gifts left from big sisters to their little sisters, who are left playing Nancy Drew for the week. The final day little sisters recieve a family themed T-shirt with matching accessories. The bigs rush over to our favorite spot, Wagon Hill Farm, with their T-shirts hidden under jackets. The littles approach the wagon family-by-family to pop a balloon with their name on it which inside will reveal the name of their big sister. Finally, bigs and littles get to embrace each other after a long week of guessing. After an afternoon at Wagon Hill, families have a tradition of going out to eat together at their favorite restaurants in Portsmouth and continue to spend the night together.

New Member Process

Our new member process is definitely quick, but that doesn't mean these two months are anything short of memorable. Some of our most treasured traditions during these weeks are the Alpha Sis, Chi Sis, and Omega Sis events. The event starts out with new members reciting anonymous clues to lead to an older sister they've most likely never met before. The older sisters then provide them with a gift according to the theme of the night whether it be a pillow or a craft to help them learn the Greek Alphabet. This is a creative way to get the younger sisters to meet some more of our older sisters because there are so many of us! Another favorite event is our new member sleepover before initiation. This is a day where our new members have the option to sleepover our house, for many of them, the first time!

"Normally we play a game of 'Never Have I Ever...' with our own fun spin to it that crosses with musical chairs. We learn so much about each other, and the older sisters from the house that can't help but to join in on the fun. We all still talk about our own new member sleepovers (plus the ones we crashed!) and the hours of laughs we had together that night." -Ashley, Sophomore

Senior Week

To honor our seniors we dedicate the week before finals to celebrating for them. We hold events daily for their chapter and some for the rest of Alpha Tau to participate in as well. The first of the activities include a senior photo shoot at Wagon Will, where many memories are held in our chapter. The next day we have a cross between a bachelorette party and a spa party at our house with the entire chapter to get us excited for the Wedding Mixer at the end of the week. On Tuesday the seniors have walk around campus where the visited memorable locations around campus and read memories to each other, similar to the final walk in Survivor. The next day the seniors have a dinner prepared by the younger sisters. They recieve letters and gifts from their parents at this dinner too. Thursday they go out for an evening in Durham. Friday we finally have Wedding Mixer (check the "Socials" category above for more details). Lastly, on Saturday each family presents their big (or G big, or even GG Big) with a basket of gifts along with a "prophesy" of their future. The seniors, in turn, read their "wills" to the younger sisters along with intangible presents.

Initiation

Initiation is a valued tradition in the national history of Alpha Chi Omega. This chapter adds our own traditions to the night that our little baby new members become full fledged life time sisters. After our sisters are initiated, they get dressed into evening attire to sit with their sorority families for dinner served to us restaurant style. After chatting with our families we continue the night by presenting the little sisters their baskets created by their bigs who having been slaving away on crafts for weeks. All the littles lay on the ground with their eys closed while their bigs set up their perfectly organized baskets in front of them. When the littles open their eyes, they find their basket of goodies which normally consist of stitched letters, custom knot tied blankets, canvas art, family pictures, stuffed animals, among other gifts. In return for the basket, littles prepare a paddle custom made to their bigs liking. The bigs and littles are absolutely spoiled during this night, as we all say its better than Christmas morning in the Alpha Chi Omega house.

Socials

SPRING & FALL FORMAL //  Formals are some of our sisters favorite events. We traditionally spend the day getting ready together. We get ready in our dorms or pack into our sisters apartments. We meet at our house to meet each others dates and take pictures. Then we head off  on  a bus to a venue which holds our

formal dance. WEDDING MIXER //  A long tradition of Alpha Chi is our annual Wedding Mixer which ends our Senior Week fun. For this mixer, we invite one of the fraternities on campus to put on a faux wedding made up of our seniors. We have every roll filled from the bride & groom, the wedding party, the priest, and the family from thering barer down to the crazy aunt. This mixer is always a good time because of all the laughs from the show that is put on by our favorite seniors.

Red Sox Game

One of our newest traditions is traveling to Boston for a Red Sox game. This is truely the best way to kick off spring after a long, cold winter in Durham! We take a huge buses down to Boston...the hour ride is anything but boring when we sing the newest songs on our iPods and chant our favorite sorority cheers the whole ride. Watching the game with the sun shining finally beating into our skin, eating a famous Fenway Frank, shopping around Fanueil Hall, and bonding with our sisters for a day in Boston it is impossible not to have a good time on this trip.

Homecoming

Homecoming is our favorite UNH event because the week long, campus wide festivities are the most fun when you're a sister of our sorority, we know from experience. Waking up at the crack of dawn to get ready with our sisters for the long day ahead is fun, but the best part of homecoming for us is tailgating with our new members. We get matching T-shirts for game day, which makes us beam with pride when we get to officially flaunt our little ones for the community to see. This is a huge day for older sisters and younger sisters alike because new members tend to say this is the day they truly felt apart of the sorority. There is no better way to make the new members really feel apart of our sisterhood than to welcome them into this tradition.

"Immediately when I met the girls I felt welcomed and already apart of the sisterhood. Tailgating with AXO at Homecoming was a great way to bond with the older sisters right off the bat. My favorite memory was when Page and I tried to be sneaky and steal a hot dog from a grill, but we were caught. The people ended up being extremely nice and overjoyed, giving us the hotdogs and a ton of other food." -Morgan, Freshman

Sisters Abroad

We take pride in how adverturous our sisters are studying abroad all over the world from Sydney, the Gold Cost, and Brisbane, Australia to countries all over Europe. Not only do our sisters study abroad, but they volunteer abroad for brigades and other programs. The only thing that could make an experience over seas even more special...is sharing the experience with your sisters.

"I always knew I was going to study abroad, and when I found out I had to go for my major, it was perfect. Yeah, I got dumped for it and missed out on one semester at UNH, but in no alternate universe would I have changed my decision. I’m so grateful to have had a sister with me in a small, Italian town that spoke not one lick of English. Every day for us was a constant battle of not understanding the language. We had exciting adventures all over Italy (plus Budapest and Athens!) where we tried new foods and met new people. From sleeping on airport floors, dinners in Rome, and Mafia sightings... I’m so happy that I had an amazing sister to share it with. In just 3 months I completely submerged myself into a new culture, pounds of pasta, and unbelievable sights; introducing myself to a version of me I would have not met otherwise."  - Emma R, Junior
